Tips for Beginning Scuba Divers

Scuba diving is a rewarding experience for those who wish to enjoy scenic underwater vistas up close. However, unlike snorkeling or plain old swimming, you need specific knowledge before taking the plunge out in the open water. If you feel you're ready to strap on some gear and get going, here are a few tips for beginning scuba enthusiasts.

Understand What's Involved

Scuba diving is just that: diving. It involves depths you don't get to with other water sports and therefore has the potential to be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. That's why there are scuba courses taught by certified instructors that require you to learn dive theory, underwater hand signals and general safety measures. These include reading instructions, watching videos and going on supervised dives.

Decide on a Course

If you're not sure whether you're up for a full scuba course to start, you can take a shorter class called Discover Scuba Diving that offers an overview of what scuba is all about. You'll learn basic scuba safety and will complete both confined water training and an open water dive. However, if you want to be able to dive where you choose at depths up to 60 feet, you'll need to complete an open water certification course with a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certified teacher. These are longer courses that give you all the information and beginning experience you need to start diving on a regular basis. The certification never needs renewing and is accepted around the world.

Know Your Equipment

You've seen scuba divers all suited up, swimming around with bubbles streaming out behind them, so you know that getting deep under the water requires a complete set of equipment. Though it's possible to rent scuba gear in many locations, having your own ensures that each item fits properly and is comfortable. To get started, you'll need recognizable components such as fins, a mask, a snorkel and a wetsuit. A buoyancy compensator device (BCD) and weight belt are also necessary for controlling your buoyancy when underwater. Scuba tanks or dive cylinders hold the air you'll breathe while diving, and a regulator ensures that the air is delivered when you need it.

Have Fun!

It might seem like there's a lot of "technical stuff" to get through before you can start scuba diving, but remember that the whole point of this unique sport is to have fun. Learning to scuba dive gives you a skill that you can use for the rest of your life to enjoy new experiences and see the world in a different way. Once you're familiar with the techniques, comfortable with the equipment and properly certified, you can choose dive sites that appeal to you anywhere in the world. Being able to get up close and personal with underwater life is the biggest joy of scuba diving. Use your newfound knowledge as an opportunity to travel to beautiful places that you always wanted to visit and enjoy nature in an intimate way.
